During one activity the children had the opportunity to construct larger cubes using 8 mini cubes. Once the children had made many of these larger cubes, I demonstrated how to build an even bigger cube with 8 of their cube constructions. The enormous cube was assembled using 512 mini cubes and the children were wowed by the big number!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The children were extremely enthusiastic and the conversation between them developed as follows:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI\u2019ve made two big cubes now.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cSo have I. I\u2019m making another one now.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cLet\u2019s put them together and make another enormous one.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cHow many have you done?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m doing another one and I\u2019ve got 4 here.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I then showed the children that they could construct a gigantic cube using 8 of their larger constructions.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWow! Mrs Hifle, that\u2019s amazing!\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI don\u2019t think we will have enough little cubes.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cLet\u2019s just keep building and see.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Look I\u2019ve made another big cube.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cPut it next to my cube. Press hard so it clicks.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWow! Look at it now.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWe are making a ginormous cube.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cYes it is super big. Really, really big.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThis is amazing!\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWow! Wow! Wow! Look at this. It is huge.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThat was fun.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cCan we keep it, or do we have to tidy away?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cYeah! That\u2019s good we can keep it because it will take a big time to do it again.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cLook everyone.
