Hello Parents & Carers,

Welcome back to the Forest School Blog…

Last week at Oxford Road we went on a trip to Moseley Park and did a winter themed treasure hunt. Toddlers and Preschoolers had the opportunity to look at different species of trees, some fungi growing on dead wood, as well as feeding the ducks and exploring their surroundings. Going on our trips is a great way for the children to expand their knowledge of the outdoors and to enhance their sensory experiences.

At Norfolk Road we also did winter themed treasure hunts, they spotted a robin bird and we found some jelly ear fungi, growing on dead wood, which the children found fascinating! The children were very excited to receive their new delivery of garden rakes, which they used to rake the remaining autumnal leaves. There was a lot of water play too, not to mention one of their favourite activities … painting trees with mud paint. The children have been demonstrating a great understanding of safety outdoors and are able to recall important information such as not touching and ingesting wild berries and mushrooms, as they can “make us very poorly”.

Last week at Harborne Road, we also went on a trip with some of the Preschool children; we travelled  to Warley Woods. This was our very first trip together and the children really enjoyed expanding their learning in a new environment. We discussed topics such as tree canopies, saplings, fungi and hibernation. There was great emphasis on highlighting the importance of looking after the natural environment through conversation and play. Back at the nursery we explored sensory activities relating to ice and water with the toddlers and some of the Preschool children had the opportunity to practise their pincer grip skills by hanging up their gardening gloves on a temporary washing line made out of twine and pegs.

Another gentle reminder … to please remember to bring spare clothes for your little one/s (especially on Forest School days), wellies, wetsuits, winter hats, gloves and scarves to ensure that your child can make the most of their Forest School sessions during the winter months!
