Hello Parents & Carers,

Welcome back to the Forest School Blog …

Last week at Oxford Road the toddlers created their very own compost box (see below for instructions on how to make your own at home). They had the opportunity to use their new hand drill to create holes in the box, before filling it up with layers of compost, sticks, shredded paper, strawberry, banana and potato peels. They finished off by digging for worms, counting them and putting them inside the box. The children loved foraging for materials, shredding the paper, getting their hands stuck in, feeling the different textured materials and learning about worms. Over the coming weeks and months the children will have the opportunity to see the compost breakdown in the box, add more layers and use the compost for growing seeds. Other activities that they enjoyed engaging in included, looking at the buds on the trees, mark making with chalk, looking after the daffodils, playing in the sandpit and enjoying the spring weather.

At Harborne Road the preschoolers and toddlers also had the opportunity to create their own compost bin. This time we added egg shells and tomatoes. Again the children really engaged with and enjoyed the process of putting it together, learning about worms and digging in the ground to find some to put in the compost box. Other activities that they enjoyed included: looking at the buds on the trees, mark making with chalk, looking after the tulips and strawberries, relaxing in the hammock and enjoying the spring weather.

Spring has arrived and the weather has warmed significantly. It is imperative that all children have loose breathable clothing (full coverage), sunhats, wellies (for waterplay) and suncream to ensure that they are safe and can enjoy their sessions outdoors.
