Sport
The spirit of the game…
We may be small in size, but not in passion or aspiration when it comes to sport and physical exercise. Our Lower School children enthusiastically engage in gymnastics, dance and movement, and their ball skills are developed by professional tennis coaching during their first four years at school. All children start swimming lessons in Year 1.
As children move into Upper School, the focus shifts to team sports such as football, netball, hockey, cricket and tag rugby. Competitive fixtures against local schools are a weekly feature of the timetable from Year 3 onwards. A number of our teaching staff hold coaching qualifications from national sports associations, and we hire professional coaches from time to time.
Our site accommodates a hard netball / basketball court and a polymeric all-weather surface which can be used for hockey and 5-a-side football. However, we also have access to first class sporting facilities at Avery Fields, a short distance along the Hagley Road. Our older children train and play fixtures there, and also play tennis on the courts at Edgbaston Priory Club. The weekly swimming lessons pay dividends when our children compete with distinction in local galas, and our enthusiastic cross country runners take part in inter-school competitions.
Sport is taken seriously at Norfolk House. As well as promoting good physical and mental health, it builds character, confidence, resilience and teamwork. A necessary counterpoint to the challenges of the classroom, we find that enthusiasm on the games field goes hand-in-hand with success in the examination hall.
‘My hearty compliments for introducing House events which not only encourage teamwork, but recognise and honour individual talent’.
