Unbelievably, the Summer Term is here and the children in Transition are beginning to prepare for their move up to Reception. It is at this time that it becomes evident just how much progress our young learners have made throughout the school year. Many of the children already know all of their letter sounds, can write their own names, and are beginning to apply simple mathematical concepts independently.

A careful balance of formal learning and child initiated play enables the children to make rapid progress in all areas of the curriculum. While small class sizes, along with the support of additional adults, ensures personalised learning, with each pupil progressing at their own pace.

The Transition timetable encompasses all areas of the Early Years Foundation Stage curriculum. Morning sessions focus primarily on Literacy, Mathematics and Phonics. Home reading books are introduced at the beginning of the school year, promoting a love of reading, and giving the children the opportunity to apply their developing phonics skills. The children also have weekly Music and ICT sessions.

Each afternoon, children are encouraged to consolidate their learning through an exciting range of independent activities. Our topic this half term is ‘Under the Sea’. The children will have the opportunity to explore the ‘ice cream shop’ role play area, a ‘rock pool’ outside and our new ‘water wall’, promoting language development and turn taking. The topic will also provide a wealth of creative opportunities. We will be exploring bubble painting, creating a giant ‘Rainbow fish’ as a whole class, and exploring movement by pretending to be a range of different sea creatures in P.E.

It is an absolute pleasure and a privilege to teach the children in the Transition class. I am continually amazed by the progress they make, whether it be academic achievements, creative abilities or simply their growth in self-confidence. I look forward to witnessing many more ‘Wow’ moments’ this term.
